  • Marcelo defends opening "an immigration entry channel" to rebuild affected areas

The President of the Republic said, during a visit to a company in Soure, that he had heard the same concern from several people: “There needs to be labour to carry it out.”

The President of the Republic defended this Wednesday the opening of “an entry channel” for immigrants to address the shortage of labour needed to rebuild the areas affected by Storm Kristin, which struck Portugal a week ago.

The Prime Minister presented a support package on Sunday aimed at helping families and businesses affected by the storm, but victims have warned about the lack of personnel to move forward with reconstruction work, said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa during a visit to a company in Soure that had opened at the beginning of January and was devastated just 15 days later by the storm.

“A solution has to be found. I believe the Government will consider opening a pathway, an entry channel for labour specifically suited to this type of challenge,” said the Head of State, arguing that this is not a matter of “having the will,” but rather of resolving “a problem.”

Marcelo said he had already heard the same concern from several people: “One of the issues raised by various business owners and affected sectors, even institutions such as the fire services, was to tell me that all of this is very good, but there needs to be labour to carry it out.”

Regarding whether the package presented on Sunday will be sufficient to meet the needs, he reiterated that everything depends on implementation and the amounts involved: “It is important that the machinery works well and that there is speed” in the response.
