Portuguese Cities Ranked Among the Most Colorful in the World
Portugal has once again stood out on the global tourism map. According to a recent study by Irish travel insurance provider JustCover, the Portuguese capital Lisbon has been ranked the most colorful city in the world, achieving a perfect score of 100/100, while the northern city of Porto secured third place with a score of 91.6/100.
Beyond Lisbon and Porto, other cities in the ranking also demonstrated strong visual appeal. Kuala Lumpur ranked second, impressing with its contrast between modern skyscrapers and traditional temples, as well as its vibrant neighborhoods and landmarks. Latin American cities such as Cartagena and Rio de Janeiro also made the top five. Cartagena is known for its brightly colored colonial buildings and flower-filled balconies, while Rio stands out with its coastal landscapes and iconic, artistically designed staircases.

Several cities in the Americas also performed strongly, including Havana, Guanajuato, and New Orleans, all recognized for their rich architectural colors, street culture, and neon-lit urban environments. In Europe, aside from Portugal, Dubrovnik and Barcelona also ranked highly, showcasing diverse expressions of color shaped by different cultural and historical contexts.
The study analyzed representative images from 78 global destinations using pixel-level data to measure color diversity. All images were taken in natural daylight without filters, ensuring objective and comparable results.
Strong Visual Identity Defines Portuguese Cities
The analysis found that Lisbon contains over 2.6 million distinct colors, placing it firmly at the top of the global ranking. This diversity is driven by its unique urban landscape, including pastel-colored buildings, traditional ceramic tiles across historic neighborhoods, iconic yellow trams, and the widespread use of terracotta rooftops—all contributing to a highly recognizable city aesthetic.
Porto also performed exceptionally well. Its colorful riverside houses along the Douro River, historic districts, and cobblestone streets reflect an authentic and visually rich urban environment, further reinforcing Portugal’s leading position in global city aesthetics.

Aesthetic Appeal Gains Importance in Tourism
The study highlights that in the era of social media, a destination’s visual appeal has become as important as its culture and cuisine. According to Aaron Brennan, Director at JustCover, a city’s color diversity and visual vibrancy now play a key role in influencing travel decisions.
Compared to traditionally color-associated destinations such as Santorini in Greece or Chefchaouen in Morocco, the findings suggest that Lisbon and Porto offer a broader and more dynamic range of visual appeal, making them particularly attractive to modern travelers.
Tourism Appeal Supports Broader Urban Value
As global tourism demand continues to grow, Portugal’s strengths in safety, quality of life, and cultural diversity are becoming increasingly evident. This recognition not only enhances the international visibility of Lisbon and Porto but also reinforces Portugal’s positioning as a high-quality travel destination.
At the same time, increased tourism appeal tends to support the growth of related sectors, including hospitality, short-term rentals, and urban commercial activity. With a gradual shift toward higher-spending visitor segments, this trend is also expected to generate sustained positive impacts on the local economy.
