Portugal is investing in inland tourism
Portugal is investing in inland tourism, hoping to draw more visitors away from the busy coastline and into parts of the country that are often overlooked.
A new round of funding from Turismo de Portugal will support 12 projects across low-density regions, totalling around €11 million, including €4.5 million in direct funding. The focus is on experiences that feel more local and less crowded. From nature and wellness tourism to gastronomy and cultural routes.
The idea is simple: spread tourism more evenly across the country and give smaller communities a chance to benefit, not just Lisbon, Porto, or the Algarve coast.
Keeping the traditions
Many of the supported projects are rooted in what these regions already do best — traditional food, landscapes, and slower, more experience-driven travel. At the same time, the initiative aims to create jobs and bring new life into rural areas that have struggled with depopulation over the years.
Sustainable tourism
Officials say this is part of a wider strategy to make tourism in Portugal more sustainable and less dependent on a handful of hotspots. Instead of increasing numbers in already crowded destinations, the goal is to encourage visitors to explore beyond the obvious.
Whether travellers will actually make that shift, however, is another question.
Attracting visitors
While inland Portugal offers space, authenticity, and a very different pace of life, attracting consistent visitor numbers has always been a challenge — especially outside peak seasons.
Still, the investment signals a clear direction: Portugal wants to redefine what travelling in the country looks like, moving away from just sun-and-sea holidays and towards something more diverse, and perhaps more.
